Trigeminal nerve pain

Do you feel pain after consuming cold beverage, breathing in cold air or brushing your teeth? Does this pain feel like being hit by electric current which flows through your face? Then you may suffer from trigeminus nerve pain, which is considered to be one of the most intense pains.

Characteristics of Trigeminal Nerve Pain and its Causes

Trigeminal neuralgia is a chronic condition of the trigeminal nerve (nervus trigeminus).

It is characterised by jolts of excruciating pain that affect half of the face. The patient can be completely paralysed with pain.

These jolts of pain come in irregular intervals. In most cases, it is possible to see what the trigger is. Common triggers may be chewing, brushing one’s teeth, or even mundane stimuli like touching the face with the tip of a finger or feeling a draft.

Causes of neuralgia may vary.

Primary form of the condition does not have a clearly determined cause. It affects individuals in middle and higher age. Pain comes in sudden unilateral attacks in the area of the cheek, eye or lower jaw.

Secondary form is caused by irritating the nerve by various health issues and appears anywhere along the nerve and in any age. Inflammation, injuries or even tumours may be the cause. Especially tortuous pain is a result of herpes zoster complications.

Trigeminal Nerve Pain Treatment – Rid yourself of the Pain

Until recently, administering drugs was the only conventional way of treating trigeminal neuralgia.

Drug treatment only helps a specific number of patients and has many side effects. One of the commonly-prescribed drugs are anti-convulsion preparations, which have been found to have good effect on the condition (like carbazepamine). If the cause cannot be determined, the goal is to soothe pain.

In some cases, surgical intervention is considered. Surgical treatment, however, only helps with some causes of the condition.

Despite intense research of the problem and its solutions, there is a large number of patients who do not react well to these treatment methods.

3D pulsed therapy is a significant support and symptomatic treatment of trigeminal nerve pain. Timely and daily applications may prevent transition into the chronic form and general exacerbation of the condition.
