White fingers (Raynaud’s syndrome)

Does it happen to you that your hands get cold and your fingers go white, and that their sensitivity and mobility decreases? It could be Raynaud’s syndrome. Decreased blood perfusion can be a result of a poor lifestyle or a more serious illness.

Characteristics of White Fingers (Raynaud’s Syndrome), and its causes

Raynaud’s syndrome is a local vasospastic disorder. It is manifested by attacks of vascular spasms in the fingers and toes, and is asociated with discoloration; the so-called „dead“ fingers or toes (digiti mortui) are seen as white. This is followed by red coloration of the fingers, which is caused by renewed dilation of vessels and accelerated blood flow.

In these phases, decreased sensivity in fingers, cold, pain and a tingling sensation can be felt.

Raynaud‘s syndrome must be distinguished from Raynaud‘s disease.

While Raynaud’s disease makes life unpleasant through the above mentioned manifestations, Raynaud’s syndrome can lead to a long-term decrease or cessation of blood flow.

In cases of Raynaud’s syndrome, it is a co-morbidity of more serious diseases:

  • rheumatic,
  • arterial,
  • neurological,
  • cancer, and other diseases.

The most common causes of a Raynaud’s syndrome flare-up is cold, moisture, air circulation or exertion.

White fingers is most freqently suffered by female smokers.

Treatment of Raynaud’s syndrome – get rid of your problems

The first goal of examination is to find out whether it is only reactivity of vessels (Raynaud’s disease) or a complex disease (Raynaud‘s syndrome).

Proposed treatment and future follow ups are dependant on correct diagnosis.

The core point of non-pharmacological treatment is to decrease stress and large fluctuation of emotions, which can lead to the development of symptoms.  It is best to avoid cold and to keep one’s hands warm, use gloves in winter and to immediately stop smoking.

Pharmacological treatment consists of a calcium channel blocker, which relaxes the smooth muscles of blood vessels long-term.

3D Biomag pulsed therapy helps supress symptoms of White Fingers (Raynaud‘s syndrome).
